Education System

The academic options available to foreign students cover all possible fields of study. Programs in US Universities & Colleges range from short term certificate courses to Post Doctoral Degrees.

  • Bachelor level education in USA starts after completion of 12 years of primary and secondary education. Bachelor’s program is of four years duration. This is the first level from which most foreign students start their career.
  • Professional Schools – universities offer for professional studies in field of Medicine, Pharma, Law etc, that lead to degree such as MS, PhD, MPT (Physiotherapy). Upon completion of these programs and subject to meeting other requirements, students can practice as professionals in their fields. To take up professional degree programs, students have to first complete their four year degree program.
  • Graduate School – Graduate Schools and specialized colleges offer various degree programs such as Engineering, Arts and Sciences at the post-graduate level. These lead to Master’s and Doctoral level programs. Duration of these programs range from one to five years, depending on the level and field of study. Most of the Master programs are of two years and Doctoral level are of four years duration.For Indian students, admission into Master’s level program is possible with a four-year degree. It is also possible to seek admission into the same, with a three-year degree (based on college requirements) from India. However, universities may ask you to take additional pre-requisite courses to compensate for the fourth year requirement. Some ask applicants to complete a ‘Bridge’ program comprising a few additional courses while doing the Master’s program. Such ‘programs are mainly offered in the fields of Computer Science, Information Systems, IT and Business Administration.Also, some universities do directly accept the three-year degrees as equivalent to their Bachelor’s degree and enroll students from India into their Master’s programs, especially in MBA.

Academic Year

Universities in US operate on a Semester system. Main semester for student intake is the Fall semester, which starts in August / September. All universities offer admission during this semester. Many offer admission during spring semester, which starts in January. However, most programs are offered during Fall, especially for MBA programs at leading business schools.

Required Tests

For Undergraduate admissions, the standardized required tests usually include:

  • Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)

For Graduate & Professional programs, required tests include

Work Prospects

Students in USA are not allowed to work full time. Employment for international students on non immigrant visa like F-1 is strictly regulated.
